Old Business:

v     Move futurity back to Des Moines

·         At this time, there is no plan to move the futurity back to the fairgrounds

·         It could be used as a back-up, if necessary

·         There are also other new facilities being built in the Des Moines area that could be considered

v     Weanling Jackpot proposal

·         Alan Burnison reviewed the concept and it was discussed. It was decided that Alan would put together a more detailed plan of how it would work before being approved.

v     Calendar

·         Details of the calendar were discussed – money raised, the printer used, distribution

·         Everyone seemed to like the results and will most likely do another one for 2009 – but start earlier!!

·         Since we are getting some of the ads from IHSA members, it was decided to send all IHSA members a free calendar next year, along with the futurity members and stallion owners.

v     IHSA magazine ad

·         A copy of the futurity ad sent to Mary Borg / Fay Coulthard was given to all directors

·         As discussed in previous meetings, we are trying to get the three Iowa associations closer – this was one idea that we thought could help in that goal

New Business:

v     Jean DeBoom announced she was going to step down from the board at this time, so Jackie Rongish could have the director’s voting privilege

o       Thanks to Jean for all of her work over the years!

o       She has agreed to help out with any secretary / treasurer questions going forward

v     Breeder’s Stake – 2008 class

o       Purse over $14,500

o       20 eligible foals (37 stallions at auction, sold 18 with two ‘seconds’)

v      Breeder’s Stake – payout

·         Alan Burnison presented a plan to modify the payouts, so the 6th through 8th places paid out a little more

·         If purse is at least $10,000, the payouts would be as follows:

§         1st – 35%        2nd – 27.5%    3rd – 22.5%     4th – 15%

§         5th – $1000    6th – $1000     7th – $500       8th – $500

·         If the purse is under $10,000, the old system would be used:

§         1st – 40%        2nd – 25%        3rd – 15%        4th – 10%

§         5th – 4%          6th – 2%           7th – 2%          8th – 2%

·         This would take effect with the 2008 Auction / 2010 Breeder’s Stake class and needs to be included in the Breeder’s Stake rules

·         Mark Van Zomeren made a motion to accept the payout change and Judy Steenhoek seconded it.

v     Breeder’s Stake – auction / soliciting stallions

·         It was decided to keep the auction at the Iowa Fall Classic, rather than moving it back to the IHSA meeting / banquet day

·         There were no new suggestions on how to improve the process to get more stallions and have the contracts signed earlier

v     Breeder’s Stake – advertising

·         Susan Aschenbrenner and Joe Russell have agreed to help

·         Dawn Striegel will work with Alan Burnison on the website

v     How to show in the ‘in hand’ classes

·         Due to the difference in opinion at the 2007 Iowa Fall Classic show, concerning the proper way to show in these classes, it was decided to have the process documented and provided to exhibitors along with the nomination forms and also at the show

·         The process will read….

§         All ‘in hand’ classes will be judged in the following manner:

·         Entries will enter ring one at a time

·         Entry will enter the ring showing at a trot, be led down the right-hand rail to the other end of the ring.

·         Entry will return to the judges at a trot, and be judged on conformation.

o       On the return lead, entry is permitted to trot past the judges to the end of the ring, if so desired, and then return to the judges.

·         Entry will then be led to the right-hand rail at a walk, trot down the rail to the lineup.

·         This will need to be reviewed / approved by the directors prior to publishing

v     Unshod jackpot classes

·         Dr. Raun has again agreed to donate $1000 for the Unshod jackpot class – thank you!!

v     Late entries for the unshod / jackpot classes

·         Since we were discussing a late entry fee for the new Weanling jackpot, should these classes also have a late entry fee? The group’s response was no – leave it as it is today ($50 entry fee by June 15th)

v     Alan asked about where the stallion nomination fee should go, in the event a stallion was nominated but no weanling was shown – futurity account vs. breeder’s stake account?

·         It was decided that it belonged in the futurity account

v     Jean DeBoom reminded the group that the ASHA fees for the president, vice president and secretary would be paid by the futurity association

v     Iowa Fall Classic – class schedule

·         It was mentioned that there was very little time between the colt and filly weanling classes at the 2007 show, due to the lack of entries in the classes scheduled between them

·         Judy Steenhoek to check on getting the schedule modified to allow more time between the classes

Mark Van Zomeren made a motion to adjourn the meeting, with a second by Judy Steenhoek. The meeting adjourned at 3:15pm.
